Cavities, Tooth Decay and Other Common Dental Problems

Cavities, commonly referred to as tooth decay, are one of the most common dental problems suffered not only by children, but also by a large number of adults as well. Once a hole or a cavity in a tooth is formed, a person's teeth become sensitive to hot and cold drinks and at a later stage may cause severe toothaches. Cavities can also cause bad breath since bacteria can easily build up in decayed parts of the teeth.

Aside from poor dental hygiene, one of the main factors that can cause cavities is excessive sugar consumption. Sugar aids in the build up of cavities (we same-day crowns) because of the presence of bacteria in the mouth that transforms sugar into acid which in turn causes the teeth to deteriorate. A large percentage of our daily sugar intake is brought about by our favorite sugary beverages. We may not notice it but some of the liquids that we consume contain high amounts of sugar which can cause cavities and other general ailments. Based on Energy Fiend's list of sugary drinks.

The following is a list of the 7 drinks that topped the grams of sugar per ounce of serving criteria (concentrates were not included), which you may want to avoid if you don't want cavities:

Hype is now available in a number of variants including non-carbonated and low-calorie (low sugar) versions. But at 8 grams of sugar per ounce, Hype tops our list of drinks to avoid for keeping cleaner teeth.

Final Point: Sugar is very sticky and remains on the teeth for a long time, and the bacteria in plaque use sugars to create what are called dextrans. Dextrans are the sticky stuff that basically allows plaque to stick to your teeth.
